Development in Indonesia leads to the conversion of land use, not only dry land (mineral land) but also wetlands. Often the conversion of functions is carried out in a way or technique whose impact can be categorized as dangerous, both for the wetland itself and for the environment. Ways that have a significant impact are backfilling and burning. This method stems from the inability and unwillingness of the community to understand the character of the wetland as a whole so that in the end the wetland is damaged before the community understands the character more deeply.
Impacts do not always happen all at once and are felt immediately. The impact occurred through a long process which in the end the losses were multiplied. Biodiversity at the species level is decreasing. Some plants and animals are gradually becoming extinct, although temporarily localized. Along with the extinction of plant and animal species, genetic diversity is certain to change, a simple but broad term not to say it is decreasing or decreasing. In short, wetlands cannot be used sustainably.
Analysis of the environmental impact of wetlands is an initial activity that is considered to reduce the negative impact of conversion or damage to wetlands. In this analysis, forecasts for the wetlands themselves (physical, chemical, biological) and human life (social, economic, cultural) are made. In addition, technology for preventing and overcoming the (negative) impact was created. For this reason, this activity is in dire need of skilled and qualified human resources. These human resources are not only trained and/or certified, but also have sharp visions, bold ideas, and smart ideas in environmental sustainability.
Wetland environment is the flagship of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Lambung Mangkurat University (FPK ULM). As a higher education institution, FPK ULM not only has to know deeply about the characteristics of wetlands but also has to give the public an understanding that wetlands must be used wisely. Wetland-based research is a form of responsibility for the academic community. Its implementation must be sustainable because the science, technology, art, and culture of the community develop personally and for generations. The results of research conducted by the academic community must be widely disseminated so that the results of the information can be disseminated.
The international seminar with the theme “Wetland optimization for sustainable fisheries development” held by the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine, Lambung Mangkurat University is the second year activity that collects research papers from lecturers, teachers, researchers, practitioners, observers, students, and the public from various countries and then presented in the seminar participants forum.
